Public Power Week approaching

More than 2,000 communities and 45 million Americans enjoy the benefits of public power as a reliable, low-cost power supply option. To mark the importance of electricity and its contributions to America’s infrastructure and economy, the first full week of every October is Public Power Week. Sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA), Public Power Week provides an opportunity to draw special attention to your utility and is value. This year’s occasion is fast approaching, scheduled for October 7-13, 2012.

Heartland encourages all our customers to participate in Public Power Week by reaching out and engaging your community. Respond to concerns and suggestions in order to better serve your customers’ needs, and remind them their utility contributes to their well-being through energy service, customer service and safety awareness. Many utilities across the nation recognize the week with special events such as a community lunch or open house.

The week also provides utilities an opportunity to remind customers that public power is good for business. Because public power utilities are uniquely positioned to provide high quality, not-for-profit service to customers and communities, their competitive rates and reliability records as well as energy efficiency and economic development programs can help businesses save money during tough economic times while also reducing their carbon footprints.

APPA offers tools to help celebrate Public Power Week, including promotional logos, sample news releases, sample proclamations, web resources and more. The 2012 Toolkit includes a variety of communication materials aimed at all publics, continuing the ongoing theme Public Power: An American Tradition That Works.

New this year, APPA has produced a “Pride in Public Power” video, available for viewing online and embedding in your own utility website. Similarly, the APPA Product Store offers several low-cost items to help promote public power in your community, including books, CDs and DVDs, childrens’ educational materials and more. All of the resources are “evergreen” and can be used year-round. As APPA members, all Heartland customers are eligible to use the Public Power Week materials.
